University of Portsmouth – #BusinessTalk: “Buy Online, Return in Store”

“Increased online sales are not bringing in the profits that were anticipated and one reason for this is the complexity that returns from online sales create. We wanted to investigate the reasons why this might be the case, and what can be done to bring about a more profitable environment for the future. This will benefit customers as well as businesses”, explains Professor Lisa Jack, President Elect of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA).
Managing returns effectively is not just about profits. As report co-author Dr Regina Frei found, retailers and customers also need to consider returns from a sustainability perspective: “Recent publicity on plastics in the oceans shows how customers are driving environmental change. Retailers need to understand the environmental impact of returns as part of their CSR commitments and work towards a circular economy, where products are repaired, refurbished, remanufactured and reused, or materials recycled.”
The Faculty of Business and Law invites local businesses to this presentation by Professor Lisa Jack and Dr Regina Frei on findings from their research (produced on behalf of the ECR Community Shrinkage and On-Shelf Availability Group) with multi-channel retailers across Europe.
Professor Jack is President of the British Accounting and Finance Association and a member of the Council for the Management Control Association. She has formerly been on the Finance and Management Committee of the ICAEW and on the advisory board of CIEH Food.
Dr Frei is a Senior Lecturer in Manufacturing Engineering and Supply Chain Management at the School of Engineering, University of Portsmouth. Her research interests include reverse supply chains, circular economy, remanufacturing and automation.
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A and there will be time for networking after the talk so that delegates can engage with the speakers directly.
