The Panel
Glenn St.John-Colgan, Managing Director, Augmentas Group.
Glenn is a passionate believer in the commercial opportunities to be found in all organisations, whether public sector, private sector, SME or conglomerate, home or away. He has had the pleasure of leading a successful consultancy business specialising in professional commercial activity – buying, bidding, and resourcing. Augmentas delivers something new to the market, helping customers save money, make money and solve their resourcing issues across the commercial landscape. An innovative business leader and commercial professional with >25 years’ experience working across multi-national corporations, UK Government and SMEs alike, he has also enjoyed establishing a number of successful businesses, growing them and leveraging their value for sale.

He has operated across heavy infrastructure schemes, capital programmes, operational delivery, Government policy implementation, technology and digital. This has included all forms of commercial activity from complex international schemes to soft services for the public sector and using every form of EU compliant procurement route. He has successfully established centres of commercial excellence, best practice governance, cutting edge procurement methods and led many tier one negotiations across industries.

Alongside his business interests, he remains committed to advising Government on commercial matters – he is a Qualified High-Risk Programme Gateway (MPA) Reviewer for UK Gov – and invests in exciting and worthwhile opportunities, where his skillsets can be used best. He is also a regional Chair of the Institute of Directors (IoD).

Phill McGowan, Senior Teaching Fellow, University of Portsmouth
Phill’s teaching, research and knowledge exchange specialisms are professional selling, sales management and sales strategy. Before taking on an academic role, he was the founder and Managing Director of several technology businesses. This included all aspects related to designing new products and bringing them to domestic and international markets. Duties included everything that a small business owner needs to do from recruiting and building teams and their day to day management, to strategic positioning of the business. During his commercial career, he successfully grew three groups of businesses and exited via trade sales. He uses this experience to provide business consulting services to both business owners and potential investors.

Professor David Pickernell, Professor of Small Business and Enterprise Development, University of Portsmouth
David’s publications cover topics related to small business, enterprise and economic development policy, and his current research interests revolve around enterprise, entrepreneurship, economic, clustering and the role of universities in innovation and enterprise.

He has had over 80 articles published in refereed journals, given over 40 conference papers and had a number of chapters in edited books. He has also undertaken research and consultancy for a range of organisations, including the OECD, EU, Welsh Assembly Government, Queensland Government, Victorian Government (Australia), Welsh Development Agency, Cardiff Council, Council of Mortgage Lenders, Associated British Ports, Shaw Trust, Federation of Small Businesses and ColegauCymru.

Heather Barrie, Founder of ethical coffee suppliers Harrie’s Coffeeand Entrepreneur in Residence at University of Portsmouth.
Heather is our panel Chair for the evening. A Sussex-based entrepreneur, Heather started out with a mobile coffee truck, but the Southern Rail strike action caused her to take a second look at her long term business plan, and she now runs a successful ethical coffee suppliers, providing both beans and machines to “discerning cafes, delis, businesses and coffee lovers in general”. The strike also threw Heather into the spotlight as she became a spokesperson for local businesses affected by the action. Heather appeared on Victoria Derbyshire and recently won the Chichester Observer Business Award for her outstanding engagement as a spokesperson for the local business community.
